A student at the University of Southern California (USC) sparked a heated conversation after starting a dedicated team outside a historically black college or university (HBCU).

The student lead shared the news on Twitter over the weekend, noting that Majorette’s squad, “The Cardinal Divas of SC,” recently put on a show in their first football game.

Once this tweet started picking up some traction, people started flocking to their opinions, which were pretty much a mixed bag.

Starting with some criticism, two users said that by bringing the HBCU-coded dance and cheer style to a predominantly white institution (PWI), the original poster (OP) was giving white students a new piece of black. appropriate culture.

Others also suggested that while the team routine was great, a predominantly white organization (PWI) should not be blessed with a main team.

Similarly, a couple of other users said the OP should have just gone to HBCU if she wanted to be part of the Majorette team.

On the other hand, there were also Twitter users who showered the OP with love and support.

People also made it clear that black students at PWIs deserve to embrace their culture just as HBCU pioneers do.

Another user implored critics to look at the bigger picture, saying, “South Central needs it.”

So, just as there were people who called the OP, there were also others who stuck with it.

Finally, another user apparently tried to stay out of the debate while still trying to educate both sides about the history of the “majorette” style of dance, which would be more accurately referred to as “J-Setting” or “Drill”.

We should also note that the OP seemed unfazed by the speech, issuing a follow-up tweet that read, “JShe’s a girl from Chicago with big dreams. aIt has always been one of my culture. “

What is your stance on this topic, and are you going to be here for black students in other big name PWIs starting similar teams?
