Now with the Windows 11 2022 Update rolling out, Microsoft has released an updated Windows 11 Photos app that aims to improve how users manage photos with OneDrive backup integration and makes Clipchamp the default video editing tool.

The new Photos app brings an update to the Gallery, and simplifies browsing, finding, managing and consuming photos, according to Microsoft’s Dave Grochocki.

The new Photos app is available to some Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

Microsoft has also dropped the old video editor from the new Photos app and replaced it with Clipchamp, which offers “basic” video editing tools, including trimming, splitting, and “Pro-style” features, such as transitions and animated text. Microsoft last year added Clipchamp to its list of “inbox” apps pre-packaged in Windows 11 preview.

The old video editor is still available on the Microsoft Store as part of the Microsoft Photos Legacy app.

Microsoft bought Clipchamp in September 2021 and initially plans to integrate it with Microsoft 365 for consumers, education, and customers.

The new Photos app also includes OneDrive integration for easier cloud backups and a new “Memories” experience. Users can check their OneDrive storage usage and add more storage. Clipchamp is already connected to OneDrive to back up your edited videos.

“The update brings a great gallery, which simplifies browsing, finding, managing, and consuming your photo collection. It also allows you to easily backup your photos using OneDrive, enjoy powerful experiences on Windows devices, and deliver a delightful “memories” experience,” Grochocki said.

Panos Panay, Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer for Windows and Hardware, flags the new Photos app in its Windows 11 2022 Update announcement, which also includes a new multi-tab file explorer, and suggested actions feature after content has been copied to the clipboard, The taskbar bypass menu, and the nearby sharing feature.
