Lamar Jackson recalls draft skit with Bill Belichick that originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
Before starting his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Lamar Jackson spent time in Foxboro with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.
Jackson visited the Patriots prior to the 2018 NFL Draft, when New England had two first-round picks at 23rd and 31st overall. With Tom Brady entering his 41-year-old season, Jackson was considered his potential successor if he fell to the bottom of the first round.
Castle: The Patriots aren’t helping themselves by publicizing concerns
Before facing the Patriots Ravens on Sunday, Jackson shared a cherished memory from his preliminary visit with Belichick. The former Louisville star remembered seeing a different side to the Patriots head coach usually.
“I saw Coach Belichick’s smile,” Jackson told reporters on Wednesday. “I usually see him [has a] straight face. When I saw him smile, I was like, “Dang, you have a sense of humor.” I told him that. He said, “Yes.” I’m like, “I wasn’t expecting you to smile.” “
Belichick’s smile is a rare sight, but he’ll let it show every now and then when he’s enjoying a discussion. This seems to be the reason why Jackson was able to see it during his time at Gillette Stadium.
“Wonderful visit. We spent a lot of time with him. Really interesting guy,” Belichick said of Jackson on Wednesday.
The Patriots eventually passed Jackson, picking offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn in 23rd and trailing Sonny Michelle in 31st. The Ravens drafted Jackson one later pick for 32nd overall.
Jackson has since received NFL MVP Awards in 2019 and two Pro Bowl nominations. Belichick eventually found his successor Brady at producer Mac Jones in Alabama, but we can’t help but wonder how the Jackson-led Patriots’ offense has looked over the past few seasons.
The Patriots vs. the Ravens is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Both teams enter the Week 3 match with a 1-1 record.
